World Bank and United Nations data shows that worldwide urban growth rates have exceeded, on average, six percent per year. The number of people living in large cities has grown from 200 million in 1950, to 850 million today. By the year 2025 there will be more than two billion people living in large cities of more than one million inhabitants. In cities such as São Paulo, Lagos, Douala, Rabat, Shanghai, and Mexico City, we can already see that massive investment in infrastructure and sanitation is needed for basic maintenance of living standards.
