You become something quite opposite. You become even more involved and entwined. Next to blood relationships, which rule the valley, come water relationshps. The arteries of ditches and bloodlines cut across each other in patterns of as- Page 24 tounding complexity. Some families own properties on two or three of the valley's nine ditches. You can argue that the character of a man or woman can be as much formed by genetic and cultural material as by the location of their garden or chile patch along the length of a ditch, toward the beginning where water is plentiful or at the tail end where it will always be fitful and scarce.

In a mock-shouting voice I call out the first numbers as if I am marking off their tareas. In a moment I see the black hair and blue jacket of número uno, Ricky Santiago, as he scrambles back through the line of waiting men and followed by his companion, Sam Castillo. They must have thought we did this section. Ricky takes his position while número dos jumps down into the ditch. "Uno," I call out more softly and then take the second of my two paces for his tarea and scratch a line across the sand with the pole.

It is just past eleven-thirty. The high banks have been eaten clean of vegetation along here by generations of Ignacio Serna's sheep and goats and chickens and pigs, though this year nothing stirs in the ramshackle pens along the lower side of the ditch except a Page 30 few barred-rock hens and a pair of sheep in a cramped wire coop. The next section encompasses a siphon under an arroyo and a culvert that passes beneath the highway. This means breaking the crew into three groups and foregoing inspection.
